Washer Won't Drain? Common Causes & Fixes

A washing machine that won't drain leaves you with a tub full of water and soaking-wet clothes. In most cases the cause is one of a few common problems. Here's what we check on a service call across the Coachella Valley.

1. Clogged drain pump filter

Coins, lint, and small items collect in the pump filter and block drainage. Clearing the filter solves a surprising number of "won't drain" calls.

2. Kinked or clogged drain hose

The hose at the back of the washer can kink or clog with detergent and lint buildup, stopping water from leaving the machine.

3. Failed drain pump

If the pump motor burns out, the washer can't push water out — you'll often hear a humming noise with no draining.

4. Lid switch or control fault

On top-loaders, a faulty lid switch can stop the spin and drain cycle entirely.

If your washer still won't drain after checking the filter and hose, our washer repair team can diagnose it same-day. Prevent future breakdowns with our appliance maintenance plan.
